How to Wash and Dry Alpaca Wool Socks: A Complete Guide

Alpaca wool socks are a luxurious and cozy addition to any wardrobe, known for their exceptional warmth, softness, and durability. To maintain these wonderful properties, it’s crucial to care for them properly. Washing and drying alpaca wool socks require some special attention, but with the right techniques, you can keep them in pristine condition for years. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you care for your alpaca wool socks.

This routine is definitely on the more conservative sides to maximize the longevity of your alpaca socks – many people have no issues with what the dryer may do their alpaca socks, for example. Feel free to choose the steps that make the most sense for you and how much time you can spend on washing your socks.

Fluff Alpaca provides this guide as a general resource for caring for your alpaca wool socks. We take no responsibility for any damage to garments that may occur as a result of following these instructions. Step 1: Read the Care Instructions

Before washing your alpaca wool socks, check the care label for any specific instructions. Typically, we defer to whatever instructions are more stringent than this guide. For instance, some socks may recommend you only hand wash with delicate detergent. Although many socks say you can machine dry on low heat, we find that letting our socks air dry keeps them fluffier and more durable for longer periods compared to socks that are put in the dryer.

Step 2: Use a Delicate Bag + Turn Socks Inside Out

Lingerie Bags for Washing Delicates, from Amazon.

Place your alpaca wool socks in a delicates wash bag. This extra layer of protection is affordable, minimizes friction and prevents the socks from snagging or tangling with other items in the wash. Delicate bags are especially useful in keeping the socks’ fibers intact.

We like to turn our alpaca socks inside out to reduce pilling and prepare them for a gentle wash, but this isn't always necessary, especially if using a delicates bag.

Step 3: Choosing the Right Wash Cycle

Alpaca wool is delicate and can be easily damaged by agitation and high temperatures. Use a delicate or wool cycle on your washing machine, which mimics hand washing by using slow, gentle rotations. Set the water temperature to cold or lukewarm, as hot water can cause the fibers to shrink and lose their shape.

Step 4: Select the Right Detergent

Eucalan No-Rinse Delicate Wash, from Fluff Alpaca.

Use a mild, wool-friendly detergent that is free from harsh chemicals and enzymes. Some regular detergents can be too aggressive, stripping the natural oils from the wool and causing the fibers to become brittle. Gentle, sensitive detergents are the way to go here. And don't use too much – overuse of detergent can leave a residue that is difficult to rinse out, leading to stiffness and reduced softness

Our favorite detergent for both handwashing and delicate machine washing alpaca is Eucalan, a no-rinse wash. Please note this product does contain Lanolin, the grease found in Sheep's wool. Some people choose alpaca specifically because it lacks Lanolin, as it can irritate a small percentage of people's skin. If this applies to you, Eucalan may not be the right fit.

Step 6: Hang Drying Alpaca Wool Socks

Stainless Steel Sock Hangers with 10 Clips, from Amazon.

After washing, it’s time to dry your alpaca wool socks. Thicker socks may be a little waterlogged after a delicate cycle. If this is the case, never wring or twist the socks, as this can distort their shape. Instead, gently press out excess water by rolling the socks in a clean, dry towel.

For the most part, we don't need to press out our socks and can go straight to hang drying socks. We find that using wire metal sock hangers to hang your socks is the easiest method. These hangers allow air to circulate freely around the socks, promoting even drying and helping to maintain their shape. Avoid hanging them in direct sunlight or near heat sources, as excessive heat can damage the fibers.

Step 8: Pair and Store

Once the socks are completely dry, they are ready to wear or store.

Bundling your socks together can stretch the elastic and distort their shape. It also makes them more likely to get lost in your drawer. Instead, lay one sock on top of the other and roll them together. This method keeps the elastic intact, maintains their shape, and makes it easier to organize and find pairs in your drawer. Especially if you have a handy sock organizer, like this one from Amazon.

Properly cared for alpaca wool socks should retain their softness, durability, and elasticity for much longer than socks improperly washed and dried.

Summary

Washing and drying alpaca wool socks require a gentle touch and the right tools. By using a delicate wash cycle, a mild detergent, and delicate bags, you can ensure your socks remain in excellent condition. Avoid common mistakes like using too much detergent, and always hang dry your socks when possible. Hopefully, you're now an expert in how to wash and dry alpaca socks! With these tips, your alpaca wool socks will stay soft, warm, and luxurious for many cozy seasons to come.
